Funny that you should post this video of the 50 megaton blast over Novaya Zemlya today. Earlier this week my wife and I were discussing a Quark Expeditions trip to Novaya Zemlya in 2021. Not that we are interested in seeing nuclear devastation, but it's all about arctic wildlife like polar bears and walruses, and glacial scenery. One redeeming feature - the long-lived fission products produced by the plutonium trigger - strontium 90 and cesium 137 - will have had more than two half lives to decay by now. But we are a bit too late - only shared triple cabins are available by now, and mid-summer is not a great time to take Jack to our dog sitter in HOT Grand Junction. Dogs do complicate trip planning. I do hope that we will end the ongoing plan to enlarge our nuclear stock pile - it would be nice to have a liveable planet in the future.
