I had the opportunity for years at Railfest to pull caboose 0500 with Eureka. Whenever we stayed over night in Silverton I would sleep in 0500 to stay with the locomotive. I was mesmerized by the fact that I was running a locomotive built in the 19th century, staying in a caboose built in the 19th century on a railroad built in the 19th century. It was the greatest of time machines. H. G. Wells had no idea that time travel could be so simple and did not need an elaborate " invention" of a time machine that he envisioned.in his novel.
