D&RGW records do not show everything. Mike Davis and Jim Ozment told me that anything that cost less than $500 did not require Denver approval and records were not retained. Mike Davis recalled an experience when he was Train Master at Alamosa. The standard gauge Jordan Spreader kept there required some repairs to the brakes. The Alamosa roundhouse no longer had a functioning heating system. He said temp was below zero and it was brutal in the inspection pit. So he wanted to buy a large electric heater from a local hardware store. The heater cost was about $900, so he had the hardware store do the sale in two invoices each one less than $500.
