The LK&P is a classic case of "Always Own Your Own Right of Way". When it was constructed in the late 1960's, it was built on leased land with a 50 year lease agreement. Back then, there was a lot open land, cane fields, and such on west Maui. 50 years later when the leases came up for renewal, the property owner (undoubtedly different from the original land owners) saw big $$$$ to be made building more resort hotels where the LK&P runs. Some of the railroad right of way is in locations where redevelopment is not likely to be a problem, but a couple of locations where the RR runs through former cane fields is now prime ocean view real estate.
