Several years ago you could access the Midland grade through the picnic area just above where 285 starts down to Buena Vista. You could drive a passenger car all the way to the site of the large trestle (Wild Horse?) above Buena Vista. Impossible to go any further. I think that access is now blocked above the picnic area. The Midland rivaled the narrow gauge lines with the difficult terrain it went through, or over. Take the climbs to the Hagerman Pass tunnels. Those still are very accessible by vehicle with high clearance and worth the trip.. .
