1203 originally had a Cooper-Bessemer FWL-6T diesel engine. This is the same model that GE installed in its 70-ton diesel locomotives
This locomotive is the third C-C locomotive sold domestically. For this we are not counting the ALCO units built for the USA military during WWII and used overseas in Iran.
The first two C-C diesel locomotives were built by GE for the Illinois Central in 1936; one with two Ingersoll-Rand 900HP 6-cylinder engines (total 1800HP) and the other with a 10-cylinder, Busch-Sulzer 2000HP engine. This was part of the IC orders from various builders of diesel locomotives for transfer service in Chicago.
