I believe the major reason was two fold (and I could be wrong on both of these)....... 1st Smoke boxes do wear out and need replacement, 2nd And I believe when replaced the D&RGW changed those engines over to the "Master Mechanic " front end.
315 has the Master Mechanic front end,, I haven't looked into the other C-18s to see whats inside there front doors.
