My understanding is they didn't do anything, they just wanted to run into Creede. Tracks past Wasson hadn't been used in decades (1973?), and the artistic types in Creede were afraid that mass tourism would ruin the town. IE: (relative) Prosperity would make it too expensive tor them to live there.
