Back in the "Olden Days" when restrictions weren't quite so intense, we sprayed diseasel oil on the running gear to soften the grease, allowing it to soak in overnight, and the next day did a power-wash cleaning that included a suction hose mixing in a strong solution of dish soap (I can't remember the brand) and ammonia with steam from the engine's boiler.  See last photo on [ngdiscussion.net] for a shot of yores trooly in action.
