The West Side Lumber Company railroad was almost in my back yard, a two hour drive from my folks' home in San Mateo. But in looking at my slides I was surprised to find that I had made two trips to Colorado to chase the DRGW ng. before making the much shorter trip to chase ng. log hauling shays. It must of been the mystique of the Colorado lines. Plus by then I had hired out in engine service on the SP and my summers were busy learning how to drive locomotives, and the rest of the year was busy with college studies and chasing women. But by the Fall of 1960 I finally made several trips to Tuolumne and the dirt roads that followed the railroad. And it was a good thing i did, because it turned out to be the last season the railroad operated. By the following Spring trucks took over and the railroad never ran again. Here are three of my favorites: crossing River Bridge, Camp 8, and dumping logs at Tuolumne.
