Beautiful shots Greg. Germany still had a sizeable number of steam hauled trains for years after the Rio Grande narrow gauge ran it's last freights. I made multiple trips to both West and East Germany as well as to Austria, Hungary, Czechoslovakia, and Poland where steam lasted even longer. Here are a few shots from May 21, 1964 when I spent some days in Germany on the way to Kenya and South Africa.
4-6-0 38 772 in the Black Forest near Alpirsbach with a local passenger train
In the days before sound movies/video I carried a Sony tape recorder. One of my favorite sound tapes is from the open window of one of these local trains climbing to the summit tunnel on this line behind a 4-6-0. It is the one tape I listen too routinely. On one side is the 4-6-0, the other is riding behind a 3-cylinder Pacific with multiple station stops working up to 75 mph, finally riding the cab to Norddeich and back to Rheine.
A 50-class 2-10-0 on a short freight to Bad Mergentheim
