That I presume would be to do with the US interests tendency to avoid the British product en mass and also their early adoption of petroleum based power. The Brits kept on developing the obsolete steam propulsion on roadways with their very common Traction Engines, steam lorries etc since Great Britain had vast coal reserves. The US on the other hand had vast oil reserves(and very little coal West of the Wasatch) so the adoption of the I.C. engine was sealed. McKeen Railcars and Doodlebugs were well established when the Sentinel Railcars were built.

NZR experimented with several designs before standardising, some Petrol-Electrics around 1915 and the Clayton was another attempt to go with steam [ndhadeliver.natlib.govt.nz]
