I can't remember the exact details, I need to ask around on that.
The location is a double track into single track for crossing the Waikato Bridge at Ngaruawahia and back to double track. Someone may have got lost in the Winter Fog that is prevalent there. I also think the NZR then replaced the standard 15 mph turnouts with high speed versions to prevent future mishaps at that location. It is also about the only location I know where Freights aren't stopped unless absolutely necessary.
When I trained for loco service the Instructor showed us a 1950's photo with a 4-wheel Hi-sider wagon upside down on top of the Truss Bridge there, a lesson in effects of momentum and impact forces involved with Trains.
