I think UP & SP were the the only ones (along with subsidiaries OR&N, NWP, SPC, etc.
As far as train orders, they used the timetable train number and engine number, like this:
TR 216 ENG 478 MEET TR 215 ENG 499 AT CARRACAS.
The fact that they didn't use number boards with the lead engine's numbers on both is one reason why a 2-engine frieght was referred to b both engine numbers as in:
ENGS 268 AND 497 RUN EXTRA CHAMA TO DURANGO
EX 268-497 WEST MEET EX 174-209 WEST AT BIGGS SPUR
