Bob,
I have a book simply named "Marquette" by Cecil Cook which chronicles the town of Marquette, IA, in general, and the Milwaukee Road operations at that location, in particular, from the McGregor, St. Peter and Missouri River Railroad to the modern day Milwaukee Road. On page 234 of this book is a photo of CMStP&P narrow gauge 2-6-0 #2 at McGregor, IA. The caption reads, "Marquette, 1929. Milwaukee Road narrow gauge, #2, 2-6-0 has just been shopped. Complete with new paint, it sits on a flat car on a roundhouse track ready to be shipped back to Bellevue, Iowa." The photo is credited to John Adney.
It must have been standard practice to ship the three foot gauge engines to Marquette on flat cars for shopping. Steam will return to Marquette this summer when Milwaukee Road #261 steams through town on the Grand Excursion train.
