Not the case all the K-37's had tender lights and as Jerry pointed out some had the large pyle lights and other had the small light mounted on the rear of the tender. Actually in the early 40's a few got the large pyle lights on the rear of the tender but I supposed proved to be not practical due to their size and were moved to the side of the tender. The one's that had the large pyle lights early were 491, 492, 496, and 497. Those 4 lights then went to the 490, 491, 493, 495 when all the K's got tender lights in the late 40's. The 491 lost her tender in 1953 and it was scrapped so many don't realize she had a tender light mounted on the side of the tender just like the others I mentioned. I'll post some pics later to illustrate this, but again all the K-37's had tender lights and what the D&SNG has done with the 493 is prototypical to her D&RGW days. And to answer your question they are keeping the 493 as prototypical as they can based on the requirements they need to be successful with it's new life. This is something to celebrate--just amazing we have another operable K-37. Can't wait for the day when we have 5 or more 37's in service in Durango, Chama, and Golden!
