I got 2,900 from some rough math I did last year. I was looking at continuous amps rating of the NRE 764 motor and was able to translate that into continuous hp. I don't remember how I did the calculation, I could be wrong.
What I know is White Pass wants to haul 16 coaches up the grade at a reasonable speed. With that, In the Dec 2018 Railway Age article John Gray said they need at least 2,800 hp.
