Speaking of bags of sand, I noticed shop people were having to lift bags of sand up to the engines after a run, many bags to be exact and I thought at the time they sure would be happy when the sand tower was working again.
Might be a OSH requirement, max 20kg bags down here nowadays.
Back on the farm(in my teenage years) 125lb bags of fert were the norm. We had a small hopper on a 4wheel flat wagon that used compressed air to fill the small sandbox at our small country depot, then decanted into 4 gal buckets and hoisted up to top off any sandboxes. However things were different in the City depot, there was a proper fuel shed with sand tanks up high on the roof, probably a stock design from the GM catalog adapted and redrawn by the CME's dept. Compressed air blew it up there and 8 long hoses hung down inside adjacent to where the sandbox locations were on the single class of road loco. Properly thought out that was by some Engineer type, no consideration to the next purchase of motive power, eh!
