I've seen pictures of the "G" class Pacific. It's rather unremarkable looking--not ugly, just plain, nothing dramatic. They were modern engines but didn't seem too popular and only lasted about 20 years--although that could have been a case of, "It's different! Yuck!" compared to the much more numerous A and Ab types. Adhesive weight does seem low-ish though if published figures are accurate, suggesting an engine that would've required a careful hand on the throttle.
In Garratt form the "G" type was an engine in search of a job. There was nothing wrong with it so much as NZR didn't really need its abilities. It was the strongest-pulling steam class NZR used by a wide margin, at least of among those I'm aware of.
