I'm surprised that it is still there. I see it showing up in Google Street view. I'm going check next time my travels take me near Oakdale.

California Public Utilities Commission (once named Railroad Commission) is involved with grade crossing protection and has been trying to get all public crossings upgraded to the flashing red lights.

A few years ago one of the small cities in the upper San Francisco Bay area was fighting to retain an upper quadrant wig-wag because it was illustrated on the city corporate seal and logo. Don't recall what the outcome of this was.
