Not knowing where you're coming from, my advice is:
- Pick your customs entry point as Chicago, LA, Minneapolis or Atlanta. I'd pick it based on availability of connecting flights to either Denver or Albuquerque.
- Denver to Alamosa is a LONG day drive.Consider breaking it into pieces. My personal $0.03 is Denver to Colorado Springs to Alamosa in one direction, Alamosa to Como to Breckenridge to Denver the other way. The Albuquerque option is shorter driving through very different scenic country, but would give you more time to get over to Durango/Silverton/Teluride. Coming into Denver makes that more difficult to fit in.
- Don't get the smallest rental car possible. Get something with higher ground clearance. Four-wheel drive isn't necessary, but a couple more inches axle clearance would be very convenient.
- If you REALLY want to get carried away and have the time and a high risk tolerance, fly into Chicago and then take the Southwest Chief from Chicago to Albuquerque. That gets you the adventure of Chicago mass transit from O'Hare airport to downtown, Chicago Union Station, and going over Raton Pass. Give a 'margin of error' of 4-6 hours late to ABQ, sometimes more than that going the other way.
