Thanks Jeff! Here's my guess to the reason 50 ran as an extra on it's return trip from Prarrie. The first non-pass. trip to Prarrie in the morning had to be scheduled so that the daily pass./mail train bound for B.C could leave on time from Prarrie, thus being numbered train 3. It carried freight, but had a definite time to make the trip. The trip back from Prarrie after delivering train #1, needed no definite times of departure and arrival as it worked it's way back to Austin. Presumably it would have preformed any swithcing needed at Prarrie, perhaps spoted a car or 2 at the flour mill west of Prarre, could have moved any cars to or from the sawmill up the creek, switched cars as needed at Bates and Austin which they appear to have done in your con. report before tying up for the day at Austin.
