IIRC, 5021 didn't exactly "run" in the early 1960's -
From what I very VAGUELY remember hearing from a fellow foamer, the engine was donated (in very good condition BTW) on the condition that it NOT be run by the Society – at least not as an S.P. engine – but it was fired up one weekend and run back-and-forth a few yards on the siding where it was stored (in Pomona or San Bernardino?). S.P. officials got wind of this, and the next time she was fired up someone pretty high up came around and insisted that the Society at least cover up the large
SOUTHERN PACIFIC on the engine's huge semi-Vanderbilt tender. The guys taking photos and movies refused, so the S.P. rep – probably a lawyer – served some kind of legal notice, threatening that the S.P. would repossess the engine if the fire weren't shut down IMMEDIATELY
. . .
Again, the above is a story I heard some fifty years ago or more — hopefully there is someone here on the NGDF who can fill in my omissions and correct my mistakes.

p.s. In late December, 1975, while the AFT was on display on the fairgrounds in Pomona, I went along with Al Phillips and/or Andy Adams to #5021's temporary storage area at Taylor Yard in L.A. where we swapped a couple of #4449's worn-out cylinder cocks for two much better ones from #5021.
