Why Open End Gons on Marshall Pass?

Machines of Iron sell a film by members of the RyMt RR Club's private ride on the last train over Marshall Pass, and return in May 1955. The train was mostly empty open end gons. Why was this type of car at Salida and why were they being shipped west? Was the train all gons just for a scrapper to use to load the rails when the line was torn up? The Valley line was gone so how were these cars us before this train. What traffic into Salida required open end gons?
