I agree, Fred was a great guy. He worked incredibly hard and had a great love for anything with a rail and a flanged wheel. He was a meticulous machinist and if something was broken, He'd fix it and if it was good, he'd try to make it better. I first met him in 1968 at (where else?) the Colorado Railroad Museum.
I am glad that the Museum memorialized him with the 491. Of anyone that went on to the Class 1's or Colorado Short Lines, Fred kept his hand in at the museum more than any of the rest of us.
My world is a little emptier with him gone, but I know that he's with a good crew wherever we end up.
