Those shots don't look as horrible as you think. Also, did you try cleaning them up a bit in Photoshop? You could sharpen a bit, and lighten the mid blacks a little to improve them greatly! Hey at least you were there to capture what you could under the circumstances. We can't change the weather. As my dad used to say, steam doesn't always run in sunny weather!
