After my last post, I took a look at the photo of the end of 3323 and noticed something interesting;
Look closely at the end number and the area just above the coupler in the center of the car
It sure looks like there is "fresher" (ie 50 year old as opposed to 60 or 70 year old) red paint under the numbers, like someone was painting over the numbers below
Just above the coupler is a small yellow "D&RGW" that sure looks like it was quickly painted over in red many years ago
on the side of the car that was against the embankment, you can see "3323" under "3102"
This leads me to think that the number swap occurred in Alamosa in 1970. Boxcar 3102 was supposed to go to the states for the Cumbres & Toltec and something happened to it, so the D&RGW grabbed 3323, which was marked for them to keep, and quickly made it into "3012", thus keeping everyone happy. makes me wonder what became of the real 3102!
Would be neat if the C&TS painted it as 3323 on one side and "3102" on the other, complete with the "C&NM" stencil, tells an interesting story
