During my time as Trainmaster on the Grand Canyon Railway (GCRY) in the early 1990’s, I was responsible for all foreign train movements on the GCRY. This included the rare visit by the ATSF business train with dignitaries for a trip to the south rim of the Grand Canyon. During one such visit that included ATSF President Robert Krebs, the VP of UPS and other assorted ATSF, UPS and GCRY officials, the train was made up of 3 ATSF business cars,
Santa Fe,
John S. Reed (I think),
Cyrus K. Holiday, a crew dorm, lounge car, baggage car and the theatre car,
William Barstow Strong. I was fortunate enough to sleep overnight on the
C.K. Holiday just outside the park boundary and enjoy the signature Fred Harvey French toast with a ham steak on the Santa Fe while parked in front of the ATSF log depot at the South Rim. A highlight of my career, I still have the track warrants for this train somewhere.
The
Cyrus K. Holiday is now “stuffed and mounted” as a meeting room next to the BNSF HQ in Fort Worth….boy do I feel old now…..
