So glad you picked up on that Jimmy, I was hoping someone would.
The two in-close views both say c1920 as does the additional view I posted that matches Dick Bell's picture.
To my way of thinking, these three shots are all on the same day, the outfitcars show really fresh
D&RGW whereas the middle Hi-sider Gondola show the
W in fresh added to the existing
D.& R.G.
I was of the understanding that the
W was added posthaste following the 1921 reorganization and without the fullstop, Beam illustrated that with the
W only visible on a derelict Boxcar, showing the intention of the Carpainter to exactly follow instructions given; a indicator lost on the caption writer of the Beam book.
Does anyone know the exact date that the Grande started the wholesale relettering such as shown on the 04342? And just how long did cars lettered
D.& R.G. hang around avoiding the Painter?
