The southern narrow gauge railroads have been largely neglected by historians, and I think this is a real shame because there are many unsolved mysteries and stories that will never be told. For example, the A&D operated in the same neighborhood in Surry and Sussex Counties, Virginia as the somewhat better-known Surry, Sussex & Southampton RR, paralleling it a few miles to the west, but the two railroads appear to have had no interaction with one another. As Hilton notes, even when the West Hope Branch of the SS&S crossed the A&D main line at grade in Griffin, Virginia, the two lines never had any interchange facilities. That is truly peculiar.
