Rough history of DSP&P 608;
Built 1879 as DSP&P 608 and placed into service on the South Park
Renumbered to UP 24152 circa 1885
Transferred to the Greeley, Salt Lake & Pacific (UP controlled line from Boulder to Sunset (Colorado) at some point prior to 1891
Shortly after the July 4, 1891 fire that burned the Sunset depot to the ground, 608/24152 was placed on the ground at the depot site to serve as the freight house until the GSL&P was abandoned in 1893. Car was left in Sunset when track was taken up.
Car was moved out of the way of the new Colorado & Northwestern track through Sunset in 1897 and remained in Sunset as a shed until after 1906 when the C&N-W moved it to Cardinal (above Nederland) to serve as a section house.
After C&N-W was torn up in 1920, 608 was drug across the road to serve as a summer cabin until 2003.
Moved to Como in 2005.
In a nutshell, DSP&P 608 is;
-The only remaining DSP&P boxcar
-The only surviving piece of equipment known to have been used on the GSL&P
- The only surviving GSL&P depot
- The only surviving C&N-W section house.
And on top of that, it is still pretty much as built in 1879, down to the original siding and factory lettering.
