The story of the WP, the D&RG and even the Missouri Pacific is complex and often seems convoluted,

Best sources I have seen are in Robert A. LeMassena's Rio Grande ... to the Pacific., in Guy L. Dunscomb's Western Pacific Steam Locomotives, Passenger Trains and Cars, and now in Jeff S. Asay's The Iron Feather: A Corporate History of Western Pacific and Sacramento Northern Railroads.
