Can I hear a resounding A-MEN from the congregation? I have never understood pacers either. After about 20 seconds, what's the point?
The problem with the runs between Ogden and Evanston is that the track runs next to the interstate. That means the pacers are doing their thing right on the highway, and running about 45 mph where the speed limit is 80. An 80 mph speed limit is more than sufficient for avid photographers to get ahead of the train without doing anything crazy or illegal. But it is maddening when you're only trying to grab 2-3 spots and you can't get past the pace car. The folks that are doing this clearly have no regard for anyone else.....and let's not even mention the poor truck drivers who have no interest in trains and are just trying to get their loads to market.
Get away from the Ogden-Evanston run and the chase is far less frustrating. On the run from Evanston to Rock Springs, I planned and got 5 locations and it was a speed-limit, walk-in-the-park.
