Hi Michael,
The ring on a Chain you mentioned was the Slot Protector. That ring restrained the Pin drop-end by taking out the end-play needed to remove the Pin when changing from coupling position or Hook retaining position therefore preventing damage and wear. Lugs cast on or welded to the sides of the pin holes prevent the pin drop-end from rotating to a position that it could come out. There were quite a lot of jostling of parts about during running in the old days.
Descriptions of these Couplings and their application can get a little wordy.
