In the case of SP 18, we had to replace a thin section of the wrapper in the vicinity of the firebox on the engineer's side at the 3 o'clock position. There were 9 flexible staybolts in this area as well. The thin section was cut out and a new piece of 5/8" steel plate was rolled to the correct radius and cut to size. We had a certified welder install the new patch and then new staybolts were put in. We could have run it as is and reduced the operating pressure by 5 lbs but we preferred to fix it.
SP had done a number of pad weld repairs to the boiler shell over the years. They are mostly on top behind the steam dome and near the generator.
