Our aim in Como has more to do with “preservation” then acquisition. Like Jason mentions below all five existing C&S locomotives are preserved and cared for to different degrees. So we believe it would be a waste of resources to attempt to duplicate Preservation efforts of another group.
Instead we believe our priorities should be focused on items that are not preserved and may be in danger of further deterioration or total lost. As you know, we are working to save the only two type 2 boxcars but not that long ago there was a third type 2 boxcar that had survived. Unfortunately that boxcar was burned by the owner to clear his land. If we don’t work to save the remaining 2 cars, then they could be lost as well. Like wise, a C&S reefer sat in a backyard in Skagway for decades but it has now disappeared recently. Same goes for a C&S baggage car that sat in a field northwest of Denver for over 50 years but was burned by in the last few years.
So as you can see, we think it’s a waste of time and supporters donations to go after “preserved” items when others are in danger of disappearing forever. With that said, we would LOVE to have an original C&S engine in Como. But for now, it’s not a priority.
