I very highly recommend John McPhee's "Basin and Range" for a comprehensive history of Nevada's geology. I'm not sure that it's still available separately, but you can find it as Part I of McPhee's winner of the 1999 Pulitzer Prize for non-fiction, "Annals of the Former World". For an insight into life in rural Nevada – where cattle rustling is a problem even in the present day – McPhee's "Irons in the Fire" is likewise excellent.
For the histories of Nevada's few mainline railroads and numerous shortlines of various gauges – including at least one monorail, IIRC – David F. Myrick's two-volume
Railroads of Nevada and Eastern California is of course THE place to begin.
