K-36's and K-37's are 9' 5" over the cylinders. K-27's are indeed the widest engines.
I can't imagine why the Rio Grande would risk a K-28 when they still had 463 and 464 to do that. The embargo went into effect on the south end of the RGS in late Dec.1951. I don't see the Grande offering to get someone's last car of coal. Makes a good story though, just like the rest of K-28's On The RGS stories, or the Rotary sabotage story.
