The Santa Fe high-speed boxcars carried Railway Express Agency (REA) shipments NOT less-than-car-load (LCL) freight.
There was a difference and the D&RGW crossed the line and that created its problem.
REA shipments were expedited on passenger trains and just like FedEx, UPS shipments of today the user paid extra for the service. LCL shipments were small shipments that were consolidated into regular boxcars carried on regular freight trains.
