I recall reading something about this one time years ago. As I recall, it was related in regard to either the Ogden Union Depot or the UP's Salt Lake City depot. The railroads were required to do this transport if the depot and post office were within a specific distance. I do not recall the distance, but what I recall is that it was specified in "rods." A rod is 16.5 feet. A rod is one quarter of a land surveyor's chain (66 feet).
The water company I recently retired from had some easements dating back to the 1890s that were defined as being one rod in width centered on a water conduit.
