The early triple valves accommodated this. The cut out valve on the triple had three positions - cut out, automatic and straight air. In the straight air position, the brake pipe was connected directly to the brake cylinder. This allowed for the transition from straight air to automatic equipment in the same train, and there is some evidence that even with automatic air there was a practice of stopping and changing over to straight air at the top of a heavy downgrade.
