I have a DVD from Three Foot Productions –
'315 to Chama' (filmed by Ian Rattray, Steve Forney, Dennis Tebo
et al roughly ten years ago) – in which the authentic sound is truly excellent. Ian worked for many years as a editor in the British film industry, and his matching of the locomotive exhaust sound to the movement of the engines is astounding — even when moving from one camera's perspective to a different view of the same scene, the synchronization remains spot on!!
On the other hand, for sheer enjoyment how can you top the railroad scenes in Buster Keaton's
'The General' and
'Our Hospitality' and Al St. John's
'Iron Mule' (for which he borrowed the engine Buster had built for
'O.H.' ).
