That was a real winter. I was there the prior December with Gordon Chapell and we chased this freight from Alamosa to Farmington. At the end of the plowed road just east of downtown Chama was a ten foot wall of snow blocking the road. That night in the yard the temps were well below zero. But as is so typical of that part of the world, a day after the snow storm the roads were plowed and dry.
Crossing Cumbres in that kind of weather with steam and ancient equipment in the middle of nowhere must have been a real adventure. Those guys earned their paychecks.
But then I had a date with the United States Navy, and by the time to rotary ran I was doing other things. But my all expense paid tour of the Far East was not without some narrow gauge interest.
