Not out of service, just not very popular with the crews. 340 was shopped just before the Sapinero-Cedar Creek trackage was removed and assigned to Montrose for use on the Ouray branch along with 318, 454 & 456. From 1949 until 456 was scrapped (Feb. of '52) and 340 sold to Knotts (Mar. of '52) these 4 engines were all in use on the Ouray branch (and the Cedar Creek stub). However the only section of all this trackage that the K-27's couldn't be used on was the last 10 miles into Ouray which was the domain of the 318 & 340. Crews preferred the 318, so the 340 mostly sat, but she was still in service until sold.
