Arc welding produces intense light in the whole spectrum, infrared, visible and ultraviolet. Looking at the arc without proper eye protection essentially sunburns your eyes, producing blisters. It feels like your eyes are full of sand. There are effective treatments for arc flash but it is best to wear the protective gear.

An ultraviolet filter would probably be a good idea if you are shooting arc welding.
