There is another way to ride the Welsh Highland (and Festiniog) Railways for the select few - drive you own locomotive.
A friend of mine owns a locomotive, called 'Chaloner' built in Caernarfon in 1877 for use in local slate quarries. While normally kept on the Leighton Buzzard Narrow Gauge Railway about 40 north of London in England, she is holiday's this summer in her native Wales. After attending the opening of the new Welsh Highland Railway station at Caernarfon (which next to works were she was built), 'Chaloner' was moved a last month to Porthmadog for use at there recent gala.
