Hello All,
I just wanted to share some photos of my first visit to the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad. Already two years to the day on July 17, 2017. It was a visit of many firsts, such as my first introduction to live steam locomotives outside of Disney World, my first introduction to the former D&RG/D&RGW narrow gauge, and my first ride behind a steam locomotive. My best buddy and I were on the tail end of an epic 8,000 mile road trip that took us from Iowa to Jasper Canada down to southern Utah and Colorado/New Mexico. On July 16th we traveled from Mesa Verde to Chama via Durango and Pagosa Springs. It was a rather dreary day and we arrived in Chama just before the last train arrived. We went down to the depot to purchase our tickets for the next day train out of Chama and to wander the yards. The next day was a beautiful morning and turned out to be one of those Indian Summer days and our train was powered by locomotive #489. Enjoy the photos and I apologize for the crappy cell phone photos. Next time I will bring a better camera... Click on images to few in full size.
We have witnessed valley
and plain and crest,
Canon and pass we've scanned;
We have seen the best
of the glorious West,
by the trail of the Rio Grande
