Those guys, about a hundred mostly New England volunteers, somehow fit hard RR work into their regular schedules, show up for special and twice-a-year work sessions to rebuild, reviving the vintage two-foot gauge line while maintaining great comradery and a sense of humor.
That big home-built, two-car gantry rail transport/laying contraption is named Elmer Gantry, after a scalawag preacher in a popular movie played by Burt Lancaster a few years ago, replaces 15 guys moosing heavy, 30-foot rail "sticks".
The smaller four-wheel derrick is Ichabod Crane, the star of a funny/ scary Halloween movie.
Their next big project...another thousand feet or so of mountain main line track extension this summer, crossing a donated vintage truss bridge they rebuilt offsite, and eventually running through a wilderness area.
