You're right - that's aggravating!
It would be easier with two monitors, or printing these out and laying them up side by side, but I think the sections are taken at each axle. With the exception of the front cylinder section.... Which appears to be taken at the fore-aft center of the cylinder casting. Really, it's kind of a 'match up the section profile to the devices in the side view' sort of a task.
Section lines are more clear, although section lines also clutter a drawing significantly if you're trying to also add reference dimensions at that section point.
