We have double headed 315 with 463 on many occasions. A 2-8-0 and a 2-8-2. Last summer when 463 had a mechanical issue we doubleheaded 315 up the hill with the K-36 pulled from the fireman’s and engineers school train. Firing 315 up the hill that morning with Erin was about the same as we experience running ahead of the 463. It was a bit strange to look behind us and just see a large set of cylinders chasing us. Russ Fischer ran 315 that morning and she did her share of the work going up the hill. The train had been sized for 315 and 463 so we had a bit more power than necessary with the K-36 that morning.
It will be a contrast of age differences on Saturday with the small C-18 and the big K-36 running together. The late 1800’s steam technology and the 1920’s technology. The opening day train is longer than a single K-36 could take up the hill.
